Prince tooted his own horn in the RS interview about thieves in the temple, explaining how he was still improving and growing by saying he'd never used chords like the opening ones, most people don't care what chords he uses, they just want to enjoy the music.
Thieves, i thought was too, at the time but i love the demo as i mentioned. Of the album's highlights (which also include "The Question of U" and "Joy in Repetition"), I think it has the most commercial appeal-so I think it was the right choice for lead single. "Thieves in the Temple," on the other hand, has some artful mystique, and the extended version is glorious. ("My Name Is Prince" has a similar effect.) The music is all right, but something about those chanty, self-referential lyrics really bugs me.
To me, "New Power Generation" is a weak song that shouldn't have been a single at all. New Power Generation shouldve been the first pic.
